This fourth workshop provides an overview of the scale of illegal trade in sea turtle products and the use of genetic tools to aid in wildlife forensics. A case study will be presented on the ShellBank project, which aims to build traceability knowledge and technologies to track the tortoiseshell trade. The process of extracting and sequencing DNA from shells and the importance of a comprehensive database will also be presented.
The session opens with another presentation from some of our working group members on the work that they are doing, followed by an overview of the use and trade of marine turtles in Asia-Pacific, with a highlight on the illegal harvest in Solomon Islands. This is followed by an overview of the ShellBank Project, a demonstration of the process of extracting DNA from tortoiseshell products and an introduction to MtDNA profiling, all of which are tools for combatting the Illegal Wildlife Trade.
The last part of the workshop features TRACE's wildlife DNA forensics as well as spotlights the Surrender Your Shell program under the ShellBank Project.
