This second workshop focuses on various themes associated with sample collection, preservation, management and permits, with a general focus on best practices. It also offers participants an opportunity to share about the work that they are doing and the challenges they encounter with regards to the above themes.
The session will open with four brief presentations from working group members working in Papua New Guinea, Fiji, New Caledonia, and Solomon Islands. Afterwards, Dr. Alexander Gaos (NOAA-Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, USA) will provide an overview of sampling techniques for different sample types (e.g. hatchlings, foraging turtles, nesting females, dead turtles), followed by Ms. Erin LaCasella (NOAA-Marine Turtle Genetics Program, USA) who will discuss best-practices in sample collection organization and management. A breakout session will follow, dividing the participants into three rooms and encouraging discussion on the sampling techniques and data management systems they use.
After a quick break, Dr. Nancy Fitzsimmons (Griffith University, Australia) will open the second half of the session with an overview of sample preservation methods and their corresponding advantages and disadvantages. Afterwards, Ms. Christine Hof (World Wildlife Fund for Nature, Australia) will deliver the last presentation on sampling permits and permissions. A second breakout session will follow, dividing the participants into the same groups and asking them about their preservation methods and their permitting challenges.
Lastly, a representative from each breakout room will share to the rest of the participants the highlights of their discussion.
