This first workshop welcomes participants and stakeholders to the Working Group and introduces them to the initiative, the procedures of the online workshop series and the timeline of activities. The formal welcome and introduction will be hosted by Ian Fontanilla who will share his local experiences and insights and set expectations for what the working group wants to achieve.
Dr. Peter Dutton (NOAA-SouthWest Fisheries Science Center-USA) and Dr. Michael Jensen (Aalborg University-DK) will provide an overview of the role of genetics in marine turtle research and conservation, present the status of genetics work in the region, showcase the work of other International Working Groups, and highlight the needs and benefits of regional collaborations.
Afterward, participants from the first online workshop series will share their experience and their work with marine turtles around East and Southeast Asia to set the tone for the workshop series, present some real-world examples of marine turtle genetic work, and provide an overview of ongoing and potential work from the Asian region.
A question-and-answer session will follow to give the new members of the working group an opportunity to engage and to ask questions. Lastly, results of the pre-workshop survey on participants’ expectations for the workshop series and the working group will be shared with the group and will set the baseline for an open discussion.
